Merry Christmas! This has always been one of favorite times of the year. It's simply magical - looking up through pine branches at glistening lights, homemade fudge and almond wafer cookies, surprising friends and family with the perfect gifts, all warmth and light reminding me again and again of the hope I have in Emmanuel. I hope you're enjoying the holidays as much as I've been! I recently finished the first part of a big project that I started almost a year and a half ago (!) - my sunlight and shadow quilt. See the first part here. A re-imagined traditional Amish and Mennonite design, it's deepened in meaning for me in the time I've been working on it, as I've recently joined a Mennonite church (a very modern one - no long skirt here ;) and begun learning more about the traditions. And now, I've finally finished piecing the top! It may not be completely even, but for my first quilt ever, I'm quite happy with it. You may notice that two of the squares in the lower right corner are switched. I had heard a myth that Amish often plan a small mistake into their quilts as a sign of humility in God's perfection, and while this is a myth, not actually a practice, I liked the idea. Although there are plenty of smaller mistakes I'm sure I've unintentionally made, it will be a physical reminder of my own weakness.
I'm planning to hand quilt this with traditional designs, so it may be a few more years before you get another update. I haven't planned it out yet - I've honestly just been reveling in the fact that the top is pieced! - but there will be reoccurring designs over most of the face, and some sort of border within each of the border pieces. Maybe this can give you a little push to finishing up an outstanding project of your own. Happy New Year, friends!
