When I begin a design project, I like to compile what I call an inspiration board - a collection of images, colors, textures, or items that evoke a certain mood, or that I would like to incorporate in some way in the final design. (I take no credit for any of the individual images used. These collages are for my personal design process and are not created or used for profit.) The following are inspiration boards I've created for three imaginary weddings. Over the next several months, these will be the basis for three new design projects - two custom designs built from the ground up, and one upscale upcycle. (And check out my instagram @hannahpantano for more process pictures in the coming weeks!) I'm loving the trend of mismatched bridesmaid dresses. It makes way more sense to me that if you ask someone to spend a good sum of money on a fancy dress, that it be something that looks and feels amazing on them, and can maybe actually be worn again. What better way to make that happen than to let each bridesmaid choose their own dress? It was one trend I hopped on board for when planning my wedding - and it also made for a really fun day together, as we browsed online over food and coffee. For this commission, the bride had asked each lady standing up with her to find a floor length, charcoal grey dress. My client wanted something with an empire waist in a little bit of a heavier material, and had found a handful of pictures she liked but weren't quite right. Step one: initial design sketch. The dress would be fully overlaid with a fine mesh/tulle, and embellished with a custom lace design on the bodice and extra strap details. In the back and front, the sheer overlay created a second higher neckline over the base layer of the dress for a hint of an illusion neckline. Just enough sparkle for a wedding while still remaining understated, and above all, comfortable. The finished product got rave reviews - process and final garment pictures coming soon! I recently saw the Doctor Who episode titled "Vincent and the Doctor." These words from the script spoke deeply to my heart as an artist; to be an artist is to be charged with not only seeing the world through different eyes, but bringing those unseen things into tangible form.
"It seems to me there's so much more to the world than the average eye is allowed to see. I believe, if you look hard, there are more wonders in this universe than you could ever have dreamt of." "To me Van Gogh is the finest painter of them all... The most beloved, his command of colour most magnificent. He transformed the pain of his tormented life into ecstatic beauty. Pain is easy to portray, but to use your passion and pain to portray the ecstasy and joy and magnificence of our world, no one had ever done it before." . This last week has been full to the brim! The Fusion Dance winter Illustration is coming up this Saturday and next - which means new costumes for fourteen young dancers! Since this Illustration is going to be performed in several senior care homes instead of a more traditional venue, we kept things a little simpler, with shimmery blue tutus the girls will wear over their regular studio leotard and tights. Fittings went great, and the girls are so excited to be performing!
